About Matthew
I started playing the piano at the age of six, and from an early age, music became my true passion. Over the years, I earned merits and distinctions in all my piano exams, and in May 2006, I was honored with the Dorothy Grace Atkinson Prize.

After completing Grade 8 piano and A-levels including music, I went on to study Music at Cardiff University, where I focused on composition and music theory. I graduated with a 2:1 (Hons) music degree in 2009 and was awarded the David Evans Memorial Prize.

In December 2010, I completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Music at the Open University in Wales.

Since then, I’ve built one of the most popular piano tuition practices in Cardiff. In addition to private lessons, I’m an approved tutor at Gwent Music Support Service and teach piano in primary and secondary schools.
I also teach music theory up to Grade 8 level, helping students develop a deep understanding of music's fundamental concepts. My aim is to make theory engaging and accessible, enabling students to not only pass their exams but also to apply their knowledge in performance and composition.

I have had the opportunity to perform in a variety of settings, including as a solo pianist, in weddings, corporate and charity events. In addition, I have experience as an accompanist for choirs and supporting vocalists in both rehearsals and live performances.

While I’ve been classically trained, I consider my musical interests to be wide-ranging. I’m drawn to jazz, popular music, and musical theatre, and I enjoy exploring how these genres can inform and enrich my approach to teaching.
